AIITEU slams Oracle layoffs, alleges illegal retrenchment as 30,000 laid off globally, 12,000 in India
AIITEU criticises Oracle layoffs affecting 30,000 globally, including 12,000 in India, alleging illegal retrenchment and seeking govt action on IT sector job cuts
The All India IT and ITES Employees' Union has strongly criticised Oracle’s recent layoffs, alleging that the company has carried out “forceful and illegal retrenchment” of employees in India and globally. In a press statement issued on April 2, 2026, the union accused the tech giant of prioritising profits over workers’ rights.
AIITEU claimed that Oracle’s move reflects a broader trend in the IT sector, pointing to similar actions by major firms such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra. According to the union, companies are using “organisational restructuring” as a pretext to justify large-scale layoffs, while the real motive remains corporate profit maximisation.
The union further highlighted that Oracle recently reported strong financial performance, including quarterly revenues of $17.2 billion and a profit margin of nearly 21%; its best in 15 years. Despite this, the company allegedly initiated a sweeping downsizing exercise, with reports suggesting that around 30,000 employees have been affected globally, out of which 12000 are in India.

Oracle layoffs 2026: 30,000 Employees affected amid strong profits
AIITEU stated that the scale of the layoffs is alarming, especially given Oracle’s robust financial standing. The union alleged that nearly 18% of the company’s workforce could be impacted, raising concerns about job security in the IT sector.
Reports cited by the union also indicate that some employees received termination-related emails early in the morning, leaving them with little time to respond or prepare. This, AIITEU said, reflects a lack of transparency and fairness in the company’s approach toward its workforce.
Labour rights violation: Union alleges breach of industrial disputes act
The union described the layoffs as a direct attack on employees’ fundamental rights, claiming that workers were pressured to resign without adequate notice. It further alleged that such actions violate provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

AIITEU also criticised the role of central and state governments, stating that regulatory authorities have failed to intervene effectively. According to the union, the lack of accountability has allowed corporations to operate with “impunity,” undermining labour protections.
IT sector layoffs India: AIITEU demands government intervention
Calling the layoffs part of a deeper systemic issue, AIITEU urged policymakers to step in and restore balance in employer-employee relations. The union stressed the need for stricter monitoring of workplace practices and stronger enforcement of labour laws.
It also demanded regular inspections under labour departments and called for punitive action against companies found violating employee rights. According to AIITEU, only firm deterrent measures can prevent such practices from becoming normalised across India’s IT and ITES sector.
