IIT Mandi launches MS, PhD programmes in music and musopathy; know eligibility

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi's Centre for Indian Knowledge System and Mental Health Application (IKSHMA) has launched Master of Technology (MS) (by research) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in music and musopathy. The application process for the programme is underway and the last date to apply for the programme is July 15.

As per the official press release, music and musopathy is a research-based programme that aims to develop skilled professionals and researchers who can contribute to the development and understanding of music and its beneficial impacts on individuals and society, including the wellness-centric field of Musopathy.

The programme is open to both full-time and part-time candidates and can be pursued through live sessions, online classes, or in a hybrid format. The programme provides a comprehensive education in music and musopathy, encompassing foundational, intermediate, and advanced aspects, all enriched by the expertise of the IKSMHA centre.

The institute said that graduates of this programme will have a wide range of career opportunities. They can pursue careers in the classical, popular, and film music industries, or specialise in music recording and production. Research institutions, academia, and the healthcare and wellness sectors will also be open to graduates with these unique qualifications.

The seamless integration of technology, music, and therapy equips graduates with a comprehensive skill set. This prepares them for innovative problem-solving and leadership roles across various disciplines.

Eligibility

Eligibility criteria for MS and PhD admissions are outlined in their respective ordinances detailing academic qualifications, entrance exam scores, and other pertinent criteria. Candidates can check the additional requirements for the music and musopathy programme given below.

  • Traditional degrees from recognised universities (e.g., Acharya) are deemed equivalent to bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering, sciences, arts, and social sciences.

  • Degrees from accredited music institutions such as Kalakshetra, Chennai, Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya, Delhi, Chennai Government Music College, etc., after three years of music education are accepted.

Additional requirements may be imposed by the committee as needed, including:

  • Acharyanet and other certifications after two to three years of study.

  • All India Radio ratings for performing artists.

Speaking about the new programme, the director of IIT Mandi, Laxmidhar Behera, said, "IIT Mandi is committed to developing science and technology relevant to the Indian knowledge system. The M.S. and PhD programs in Music and Musopathy represent another significant step in this endeavor. This program will not only explore the science of Indian music, but also its therapeutic value for the holistic well-being of mind, body, and consciousness.”
