PIB debunks viral WhatsApp message on Agnipath scheme relaunch

The fake whatsApp message claims that the Agnipath scheme has been reintroduced as the 'Sainik Saman Scheme' after a review and several changes including extension of duty period up to 7 years.

NEW DELHI: A WhatsApp message claiming the Agnipath Scheme has been reintroduced as the ‘Sainik Saman Scheme’ is going viral. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has clarified that this information is fake and has debunked the claim.

Clarifying on the issue, PIB posted on X stating, “A #fake WhatsApp message claims that the Agnipath Scheme has been re-launched as 'Sainik Saman Scheme' after review with several changes including duty period being extended to 7 years, 60% permanent staff & increased income.” It further added, “GOI has taken no such decision.”

BJP ally JDU calls for review of Agnipath scheme

The Janata Dal-United (JDU), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), urged for a review of the Agnipath scheme on June 5. KC Tyagi, the JDU secretary and spokesperson, emphasized the need to review and examine the Agniveer scheme. He stated that there was widespread discontent among army aspirants when the Agnipath scheme was introduced in June 2022, and its effects were evident during the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

General Anil Chauhan, CDS engages with Agniveers at INS Chilka

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan visited INS Chilka, the Indian Navy's premier ab-initio training establishment for Agniveers, on June 1. During the visit, he received a briefing on INS Chilka's role in preparing future sea warriors of the Indian Navy. The briefing included an overview of training activities and an analysis of Agniveer batches trained at Chilka to date.

He engaged with the Agniveers, emphasizing that the introduction of the ‘Agnipath Scheme’ represents a significant initiative aimed at ensuring a youthful profile in the armed forces and contributing to nation-building by nurturing skilled, disciplined, and motivated youth. He encouraged the Agniveers to prioritize their training to excel as technologically proficient sailors. Throughout the interaction, he addressed multiple inquiries raised by the Agniveers.
