NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the higher educational institutions to register on ABC portal, set up ABC cell and designate a nodal officer for implementation of the ABC scheme, and to advise students to apply on the ABC portal. The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) scheme, launched under the new education policy, allows students to collect, transfer, and redeem their credits earned during their education.
In a letter to the colleges and universities, UGC secretary Manish Joshi informed that there has been a significant progress in the number of registrations and creation of ABC accounts, however, the process of mapping of credits to students’ accounts is slow. It needs to improve in order to address the “urgent issue of creditization of courses undertaken by the students”, he said.
“UGC and Digilocker are putting a lot of effort and hand-holding of institutions to make their experience on the ABC portal smooth and easy,” the letter read.
ABC ID
While listing out the steps to be taken by the institutions to enhance the outreach of ABC portal at the time when the academic year is about to commence, UGC also asked the HEIs to put nodal officer’s details on their websites, and seek the help of NEP SAARTHIs in assisting students with the creation of ABC-IDs at the time of admissions. The commission asked universities to make ABC ID a mandatory field in the admission and exam forms or on student identity card if possible.
UGC further ordered HEIs to display the posters and templates on ABC and place them on the canteen, library, notice board and around the playground or the place where there is maximum movement of students. The colleges have been directed to organizing the seminar or workshop for information and publicity about ABC in campus as well as respective affiliated colleges.
“To attain the objectives of ABC, you are requested to on-board (if not onboarded) with ABC and upload academic data with students' earned credit obtained during or after the academic year 2021-22 along with students' ABC ID,” UGC further told institutions.
