75% criteria for JEE Main 2025 not removed; eligibility criteria for admission to IITs

NEW DELHI: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has not removed the 75% criterion for the Joint Entrance Examination - Main (JEE Main 2025). As per the eligibility criteria, candidates who qualify for admission in NITs, IIITs and centrally-funded technical institutes (CFTIs) should have obtained at least 75% marks in Class 12 to be considered eligible for admission. According to the NTA rule: “For the candidates who qualify for admission in the NITs, IIITs and such other CFTIs whose admissions are based on the JEE (Main) ranks in Paper 1, they should have secured at least 75% marks in the Class XII examination or be in the top 20 percentile in Class XII examination conducted by respective Boards.” The qualifying marks in Class 12 for SC, ST candidates is 65%. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) and all state educational boards share the top 20 percentile in Class 12 with the NTA after the result declaration.

On the other hand, the eligibility criteria for admission into BArch other than National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) will be decided by the Council of Architecture (CoA).

For BPlanning, candidates should have passed the Class 12 qualifying examination with 50% marks in mathematics and 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination.

The NTA removed the 75% criteria for JEE Main exam as an one-time measure to compensate for the learning loss during COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, in the year 2023, the NTA restored the criterion in JEE Main and the same will be followed in the upcoming exam as well, it informed.

IIT JEE Mains 2025: 75% criterion

The JEE Main exam is also an eligibility test to appear in JEE Advanced 2025, a gateway exam for admission at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Last year, candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 and 2023 with 75% aggregate marks were considered eligible.

  • Candidates appearing in board exam 2025 or passed the exam in 2024 will be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced provided they qualify JEE Main and fulfil the eligibility criteria.
  • If a candidate had appeared in Class 12 in 2024 and wishes to improve their marks to meet the “aggregate marks of 75% (or 65% for SC, ST and PwD) criterion”, they can reappear for any number of subjects in the improvement exam.
  • Marks obtained in 2024 or 2025, whichever is higher in the respective subjects, will be considered during seat allocation.
  • According to the guidelines, the Class 12 marksheet submitted by the candidates should be issued by a single examination Board.
